Eng. Mahesh Dematagolla graduated in 2008 with a BSc (Honours) degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Peradeniya. He earned an MSc in Building Services Engineering from the University of Peradeniya in 2020. Additionally, he completed a Master’s in Water and Sanitation Management at AgroParisTech University, France in 2024. Currently, he is pursuing an MBA at Wayaba University of Sri Lanka.
He became an Associate Member of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL) in 2009 and was elected as a Member of the Institution in 2020. Presently, he serves as a Council member of the IESL for the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 terms. He has been a member of the Professional Standard Management Committee of the IESL for the 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 sessions. Additionally, he was awarded lifetime Corporate Membership of the Sri Lanka Energy Managers Association in 2020, and he is a Co-opted Member for the session 2024/2025.He is a corporate member of the Institution of Automotive Engineers Sri Lanka since 2022. Moreover, he achieved the status of a Green Associate Professional of Green Building Council in Sri Lanka in 2022 and is a registered building services engineer in water supply, drainage, and plumbing at IESL. He also holds the title of Justice of the Peace for the Whole Island, Sri Lanka.
Actively, he served as the Secretary of the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) Engineers’ Union from 2019 to 2022. Currently, he is an executive committee member and has been a member of Toastmasters International since 2020. Previously, he held the position of Secretary at the NWSDB Toastmasters club for the 2020/2021 term.
Eng. Mahesh Dematagolla began his career as a Mechanical Engineer with Mahaweli Authority of Sri Lanka in 2008. He worked on Moragahakanda and Kaluganga Reservoir Project until 2013. Subsequently, he joined the National Water Supply and Drainage Board, where he served as a Mechanical Engineer on the Asian Development Bank Assisted Dry Zone Urban Water & Sanitation Project in Puttalam. In 2014, he transitioned to the Greater Kurunegala Water Supply & Sewerage Project within the NWSDB. Following the project’s completion, he moved to the Mechanical & Electrical Division for the Energy Management Section at the NWSDB head office in 2017. Currently, he holds the position of Senior Mechanical Engineer for the Sanitation Hygiene initiative within the Towns project at NWSDB, where he oversees the Mechanical and Electrical work in the Water Reclamation divisions at the head office.

My experience includes Building Services Engineering and design in various fields of Mechanical engineering projects in Sri Lanka. I have worked for over 16 years as a Mechanical Engineer in the industry and have expertise in designing and operating Water and Wastewater Treatment Plants. I have actively served as the Secretary of the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) Engineers’ Union from 2019-2022 and am currently serving as an executive committee member. I also held the position of Secretary in the NWSDB Engineers Toastmasters Club. Currently, I am a Council member of the IESL for the terms 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 and Co-opted Member for the session 2024/2025 of the Sri Lanka Energy Managers Association. I aim to bring my extensive experience from both industry and academia to the Council. I am confident in my skills and abilities to contribute to enhancing engineering education in Sri Lanka.
If elected to the Council, I will collaborate with other members to ensure that engineers play a key role in shaping policies and strategies for the advancement of Sri Lanka. Additionally, I will actively participate in IESL activities to support the professional growth of its members and safeguard their rights and privileges.
