Eng. Bandhuka Kuruppu graduated in 2017 with a BSc. (Hons) degree in Civil Engineering. He is currently working as a structural design engineer for the Central Expressway Project – Section 1, Sri Lanka. One of his key roles in his career was his assignment at the ITC ONE Colombo One project (now known as ITC Rathnadeepa) as a junior planning engineer, where he was involved in the successful completion of Sri Lanka’s largest continuous mass structural concrete pour and the completion of the structural work package for the residential tower within a super tight schedule. Furthermore, he has been involved in several other mega-scale projects along with foreign Design and Build Contractors. He started his career as a site-based junior planning engineer and served until the completion of the structural works package of a high-rise building, then transitioned to practicing structural designs for viaducts and bridges. Therefore, he has experience in both site-based activities, project planning, and structural design works.

He attained the status of Associate Member of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL) in 2017 and became a Member of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka in 2023. He is currently serving as an active member of the Civil Engineering Sectional Committee of IESL (CESC) as well as the Continuous Professional Development Committee of IESL (CPDC). He has been a member of the CESC since 2018 and has mainly contributed to the Technical Events Subcommittee of CESC for the sessions 2022/2023 and 2023/2024. Furthermore, he served on the Techno Organizing Committee and Infrastructure Development Committee of IESL for the sessions 2018/2019 and 2019/2020, and the Heritage Sub-Committee of the Building Engineering Services Sectional Committee for the session 2019/2020.

Although Eng. Bandhuka Kuruppu is a practicing engineer, he has an interest in scientific research and has published six technical papers related to the field of Civil Engineering in IEEE Xplore, IESL and SSESL annual sessions, MerCon, the University of Moratuwa research symposium, and the “Engineer” Journal of IESL. As a result of this interest, he started reading for a Master of Philosophy degree (part-time) in 2020 and is awaiting the final viva examination for his research on “Honeycombs in Structural Concrete Elements.” His main focus is on research areas where the construction industry needs solutions and remedial actions in the local context.

He has written several scientific articles for the “Vidusara” science magazine. Furthermore, he is a good Taekwondo player and has won medals in interuniversity games and the Sri Lanka University Games (SLUG), as well as university colors for his sports achievements in 2015 and 2016.

Election Statement as submitted & certified by the candidate

I attained Associate Member status of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL) in 2017 and became a Member in 2023. From 2018 onwards, I have been actively engaged with IESL activities, as it is the apex body for professional engineers in Sri Lanka. I believe it is my responsibility to serve IESL as a practicing engineer in the country. I have served on the Civil Engineering Sectional Committee (CESC), Building Engineering Services Sectional Committee (BESEC), Infrastructure Development Committee, Techno Committee, and Continuous Professional Development Committee (CPDC) over the past few years, making remarkable contributions within my capacity.

I particularly enjoyed serving as the technical events coordinator for the CESC sessions 2022/2023 and 2023/2024, where we achieved a record-breaking number of events. I believe these sessions attracted more members to the activities of the IESL, benefiting many from the lecture series, seminars, panel discussions, and workshops we organized. I am grateful to those who guided me and provided the opportunity to be involved in these activities. I shall extend the same rhythm and enthusiasm and bring more innovative ideas in the upcoming sessions to match the requirements of the members of the Institution as well as the country needs.
