Mohamed Marzook Fathima Zahra, who wants to be called as Zahra Marzook, was born on March 2, 1988, and currently resides at 237/2, Vishaka Lane, Medalanda Estate, Kurunegala. She holds membership number M8833 with the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka.

Zahra earned her MBA from the Open University of Sri Lanka in 2021, receiving the Prof. Sudatta Ranasinghe Memorial Gold Medal for Excellence in Research. Before this, she completed her BSc. (Hons) in Electrical and Information Engineering from the University of Ruhuna, Sri Lanka, in 2013. Her dedication to her field is reflected in her continuous professional development, including her ongoing membership with IESL, IET and Toastmasters International.

She also completed the professional programme “WePOWER-SAR100- Women Energy Professionals in South Asia” conducted by the Yunus Center of the Asian Institute of Technology Sponsored by World bank. She is an active member of the WePower returning Mothers and  HR Experts Working Groups.

 She completed an Advanced Diploma in Teaching, Training, and Assessing Learning from City & Guilds (UK), in 2022 which equipped her with skills to train and develop others.

Her engineering career began at the Lakvijaya Power Plant of Ceylon Electricity Board, where she served as an Electrical Engineer from 2013 to 2020, taking on roles such as Operations Engineer, Condition and Performance Monitoring Engineer, and Shutdown Management Engineer. Currently, she works as an Electrical Engineer in the Projects and Heavy Maintenance Branch, Distribution Division 1, overseeing tower line construction and maintenance across the Northern, North Central, and North Western provinces. Additionally, she covers material management responsibilities.

Throughout her career, Zahra has been recognized for her contributions to the engineering society. In 2019, she was awarded the IET Young Woman Engineer of the Year award, for her contributions for promoting STEM among young women. To date she contributes to empowering, mentoring and guiding young women undergraduates in various women in engineering undergraduate committees.

Her involvement with the IESL began in 2014 as an associate member. Her leadership journey started in 2018 at the Puttalam District Centre, where she has served on various committees, including as Treasurer at present. She has also been a committee member and Assistant Treasurer for the Women Engineers Forum and an Assistant Secretary for the Young Members Sectional Committee- 2020/2021.

These roles have allowed her to contribute significantly, fostering growth and development among her peers and junior engineers. She strives to be a role model for aspiring engineers, particularly women, encouraging them to push beyond their comfort zones.

In Toastmasters International, She has held numerous leadership roles, including Area Director recently, where she demonstrated her leadership skills by grooming two Area Directors for the current tenrue. She is also an award winning speaker.

She is an accomplished Electrical Engineer passionate about continuous learning and professional development. Her career is marked by academic excellence, professional achievements, and a steadfast commitment to the engineering community. She aims to inspire the next generation of engineering leaders.

As a dedicated Electrical Engineer with a passion for continuous learning and professional development, I, Zahra Marzook, am seeking your support for the position of Chairman of the Electrical, Electronics, and Telecommunication Sectional Committee. My career at the Ceylon Electricity Board, where I oversee tower line construction and maintenance across multiple provinces, has equipped me with extensive technical expertise and leadership skills.

I sincerely believe that my academic qualifications and professional journey have given me the foundation to lead a committee of such significance. My experience in roles such as Treasurer for the Puttalam District Centre, Assistant Treasurer for the Women Engineers Forum, and Assistant Secretary for the Young Members Sectional Committee will allow me to contribute to our engineering community by fostering growth and development among my peers and juniors.
