Eng. P W Sarath graduated in 1984 with B.Sc. (Eng.) degree in Electrical Engineering.
He has been a Corporate Member (M 3183) of IESL since 1993 and he was transferred to the Class of Fellow (F 979) in 2012. He obtained his registration as an International Professional Engineer (Sri Lanka) (IntPE-112) from IESL in 2018.
He holds the Senior Membership category of IEEE (USA).
He is currently serving as a Vice-President (2022/23) of the Institution and serves as a member of the following standing committees of IESL.

- Finance and Procurement Committee (Since 2017)

He has undertaken the responsibility for implementation of the proposed new Management Information System in IESL as the “Project Consultant” on a voluntary basis and has almost completed the first phase of the project. He was instrumental in introducing the “Online PR Process” especially for interviews and “A paper” which proved to be a huge success, bringing many benefits to both members and secretariat.
He commenced his Engineering career in 1984 as an Instructor for a period of one-year in the Department of Electrical, University of Moratuwa and later joined the Lanka Electricity Company. He then chose Sri Lanka Telecommunication Department (SLT) as his long-term employer, where he served for 35 years until his retirement in April 2020.
During his career in SLT, he held the positions of Engineer (Power Operations), Regional Telecommunication Engineer, Deputy General Manager (Southern Province), General Manager (Region 2), Deputy Chief Officer (Network Planning/Projects), Deputy Chief Officer (Network Operations) and Chief Officer (Innovations).
He pioneered the introduction of Next Generation Networks (NGN) in SLT and successfully completed the respective projects to roll out “legacy systems” to NGN, on schedule. He served as a Management Committee Member of the International Submarine Cable Consortium representing SLT and contributed to several committee meetings held in many countries.
At the time of his retirement, he was designated as the Chief Officer (Innovations and Information Security) at SLT. Assuming duties, he initiated and successfully launched Industry Research Projects such as technical collaborations between the final year students of the engineering faculties and industry.
He is a registered Chartered Electrical Engineer in CEB and LECO for certifying electrical installations.
He is also a qualified Lead Auditor for ISO 9001:2015 standard and participated in many quality management audit programmes.
He is a resource person for several undergraduate engineering degree programmes and CPD programmes for various institutes namely University of Ruhuna and University of Moratuwa and SLIIT. He also serves as a panellist for Professional Reviews conducted by the Institution for assessing the candidates to elevate their memberships to the grades of “Corporate” and “Fellow”.
He has been a Consultant Engineer in Telecommunication and Electrical Installations for various projects since 2020. He is now a member of Engineering Council, Sri Lanka representing IESL He worked as an ICT project implementation Consultant for a one-year period for the “Railway Efficiency Improvement Project” funded by Asian Development Bank (ADB) in 2022
He represented IESL for the Annual IEA meeting which was held in Taiwan in 2023 and made a presentation on “Accreditation activities of IESL“.

My vision is to uplift the standards of our membership through the following initiatives if elected :
My main intention is to bring IESL as a proactive body which shall help , assist , mentor , coach all members including students etc from day one they join IESL for development of carrier path .
Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Courses:
I will organize regular CPD courses and awareness sessions to ensure our members stay at the forefront of industry advancements. These courses will be tailored to address the latest trends and technologies, enhancing the skill sets of our members.
Active Member Engagement:
I recognize that many of our members are not currently engaged with institutional activities due to unaddressed issues. I am committed to identifying and resolving these concerns by fostering open communication and ensuring every member’s voice is heard.
Sector-Specific Discussions:
I will arrange discussions with representatives from all sectors of our membership. These dialogues will be crucial in understanding the unique challenges faced by each sector and developing targeted strategies to address them.
Enhancing Institutional Visibility: I will work diligently to raise the profile of our institute within the engineering community and beyond, showcasing the expertise and achievements of our members.
Financial Prudence:
Acknowledging our current financial constraints, I commit to exercising fiscal responsibility. I will ensure that expenditures are carefully considered and prioritized towards member welfare until our financial position improves. No money will be spent lavishly; every investment will be made with the utmost care and focus on strengthening our bottom line.

I have great confidence based on my past experience in the industry spanning over three decades, working in both the government and private sector
