Eng. (Prof) Udayanga Hemapala graduated from Faculty of Engineering, University of Moratuwa with a BSc Engineering Honours Degree specialized in Electrical Engineering (with a First Class) in 2004. Also, he was offered his PhD from the University of Genova, Italy in 2009.
He received the Associate Membership of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL) in 2004 and was elevated to Member grade in 2017 and to Fellow category in 2024. He served as a member of the council in the 2018/2019, 2019/2020, 2021/22, 2022/23 and 2023/24 sessions. He has been an active member of the Accreditation Board of the IESL, PSMC, Education and CPD standing committees.
He is the recipient of Outstanding Research Performance Awards from the University of Moratuwa continuously since 2012. In addition to them, he has received several awards for research papers presented at academic forums, including the Best Paper Award at ICA-2013. Also, he has been offered a Doctoral Fellowship from the Government of Italy for his higher studies.
Among his publications, there are more than seventeen (20) peer-reviewed international journal papers, one (02) book and several book chapters published by recognized international publishers. Also, he has presented more than hundred (100) papers in academic/professional forums and symposia. Moreover, he has supervised one MPhil student and more than forty (40) MSc students up to now.
He commenced his career in 2009 as a Senior Lecturer Grade II at the University of Moratuwa. In 2017 he was promoted to the Senior Lecturer Grade I and in the same year was promoted to the post of Professor. Currently, he is serving as the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, the University of Moratuwa.
While being a member of the Education Committee and Accreditation Board, he has been actively participating in the meetings as well as in the sub-committees.
Among his other contributions, he is serving as a member of the Council of Sri Lanka Institute of Advanced Technological Institute (SLIATE) since 2020. Also, he was the Chairman-Elect of IEEE Robotics and Automation Society Sri Lanka Section Chapter (2017), Chairman-Elect of IEEE Power and Energy Society Sri Lanka Section Chapters (2014, 2015), Chairman of IEEE Power and Energy Society Sri Lanka Section Chapter, (2016) and the Student Advisor of IEEE Power Electronic Chapter at UoM, (2020-2021).

I believe that as our education landscape is changing, IESL can play an important role in outlining emerging issues, publishing new guidelines, and creating new standards to enhance engineering education. If elected, I would continue to undertake this role with enthusiasm and would be dedicated to supporting members’ views and concerns in the Council. I would like to bring my knowledge and experience in the field of Education of the Engineering profession to the Council and am confident that I have the required skills to support the institution.
Furthermore, I shall contribute to making the work of the Council more meaningful and relevant to address the important issues of the members of the Institution.
