Eng. U.G. Dilan Thilanga graduated in 2011 with a B.Sc. (Honours) degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka. He completed his MBA from the Postgraduate Institute of Management – University of Sri Jayewardenepura in 2024.
He became a Member of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL) in 2018, and a Member of Engineers Australia (MIEAust) in 2024. He has been serving as a committee member of the Building Services Sectional Committee (BSESC) of the IESL continuously since 2017. He has led the public lecture subcommittee of BSESC for the sessions 2018/2019, 2019/2020, and 2020/2021. Additionally, his role was instrumental in BSESC’s success at Techno 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019, where it was recognized as the best sectional committee.
He is a Chartered Engineer with the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL), and a Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) with Engineers Australia as of 2024. He became an International Professional Engineer (IntPE) with the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL) in 2023. He has been listed in the directory of building services engineers in Sri Lanka since 2020 and in the National Engineering Register of Engineers Australia since 2024. He is also an Associate Green Professional with the Green Building Council of Sri Lanka.
He began his career in 2012 as an Electrical Engineer at Shin Nippon Lanka Pvt Ltd. In 2015, he joined Abans Engineering Pvt Ltd as an Electrical Engineer. In early 2024, he assumed duties as Senior Manager – Solar Engineering, heading the engineering team of Abans Electricals PLC, a position he holds to date.
During his career in the building services sector, he has led landmark projects in Sri Lanka such as Colombo City Centre Mix Development, Heritance Negombo, and PVR Cinemas at The One Galle Face Mall, demonstrating exceptional project management skills. He has provided expertise in designing electrical and ELV systems for major projects such as Heritance Negombo, the proposed Abans Hotel Nuwara Eliya, Abans Hotel Bentota, and many other medium-scale buildings. In the solar engineering sector, he has led successful project execution and completion of mega-scale solar systems, including the 2.3MWp project at Unilever Horana.

My experience includes project management and design in many fields of electrical engineering, specifically within large-scale MEP projects. I have also served as a supervising engineer for over 100 graduates, sharing my knowledge and guiding them in their professional development.
I am an International Professional Engineer and a Chartered Electrical Engineer with 12 years of expertise in managing large-scale MEP projects. In my professional career, I have proven to be a team leader in project management, consistently achieving on-time project milestones and cost optimization. I have also served as a visiting lecturer in Building Services Engineering, sharing industry knowledge with students.
I am listed in the Directory of Building Services Engineers at the Institute of Engineers, Sri Lanka, and am a Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) registered with Engineers Australia. Additionally, I am listed under the National Engineering Register (NER) at Engineers Australia and am a registered Green Professional at the Green Building Council of Sri Lanka (GREENSL® AP).
If elected, I will bring my enthusiasm and dedication to addressing members’ views and concerns within the Council. I am committed to increasing awareness and pride in the engineering profession, with a special focus on engaging and supporting graduate and student members.
